Description

Cordyceps mushrooms are members of the Clavicipitaceae family, with various species featured in both Tibetan and Chinese traditions. Cordyceps militaris is one of the most studied and widely used varieties. While many species in this genus are endoparasitoids, meaning they behave like parasites, Cordyceps militaris can be cultivated on a substrate without requiring a host. It also contains significantly higher levels of the active compound cordycepin compared to other Cordyceps species, making it a preferred choice for supplementation.

Recognizable by its elongated, club-like fruiting bodies—which may appear individually or in clusters—Cordyceps takes its name from the Greek word “kordyle,” meaning ‘club,’ and the Latin “ceps,” meaning ‘head.’ Historical references to Cordyceps date back to 15th-century Tibetan texts, where it was called Yartsa gunbu and used to support overall health and adaptation to high altitudes. This particular variety was later renamed Cordyceps sinensis, and is now classified as OphioCordyceps sinensis. Contemporary research has validated many of Cordyceps’ traditional applications while also revealing new potential benefits.

Findings indicate that Cordyceps mushrooms may support multiple aspects of health, including immune function, cellular health, cardiovascular well-being, and cognitive performance. The primary bioactive compound, cordycepin, appears to be responsible for much of this mushroom’s health-enhancing potential—especially in Cordyceps militaris, which boasts notably high cordycepin content. These cordycepin-driven benefits are believed to:

• Promote healthy cellular function*
• Support immune system activity*
• Enhance energy*
• Aid cognitive function*
• Foster an overall sense of well-being
