Kambo is a traditional ritual of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon that uses the secretion of the tree frog Phyllomedusa bicolor, applied to small burns on the skin to penetrate the body. Tribal people use it to cleanse the body and spirit, increase energy, and heal, believing that the bioactive peptides in the venom help to get rid of negative energy and diseases. The procedure involves preparation, application of the secretion, and intense reactions of the body, such as vomiting or fever.
Positive effects:
- Detoxification: Kambo is thought to stimulate detoxification through vomiting and sweating, helping to flush out toxins and “cleanse” the body.
- Energy and Endurance Boost: In a traditional context, hunters used Kambo to improve physical strength, concentration, and alertness.
- Mood Enhancer: Certain bioactive peptides in the frog’s secretion, such as dermophrin and deltorphin, have opioid-like effects, which may cause a feeling of euphoria or emotional uplift after the procedure.
- Pain Relief: These same peptides are also why Kambo is sometimes used as a natural pain reliever.
- Immune Booster: Proponents claim that Kambo stimulates the immune system, helping to fight infection and inflammation.
- Spiritual Cleansing: In Amazonian traditions, Kambo is considered a way to rid oneself of “panema” (negative energy), resulting in improved mental state and clarity.
The Kambo ritual is a structured process, traditionally conducted under the guidance of an experienced practitioner. In the days leading up to the ceremony, the participant follows a specific diet and lifestyle as preparation.
Process:
- Preparation: The participant drinks a large amount of water (about 1-2 liters) to facilitate subsequent cleansing.
- Creating entry points: Small superficial burns (usually 3-5 points) are made on the skin (usually on the arm or leg) using a hot stick, removing the top layer of skin.
- Application of the secretion: The secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor frog, collected in advance and dried, is diluted with water and applied to the burns. It quickly penetrates the lymphatic system.
- Reaction of the body: After a few minutes, intense effects begin: fever, increased heart rate, nausea, vomiting, sweating, sometimes dizziness or trembling. This lasts 15-30 minutes.
- Completion: After the peak of the reaction, the symptoms subside, the secretion is washed off the skin. The participant is given a rest, often offered tea or light food for recovery.
The ritual is accompanied by the support of a guide who monitors the condition of the participant.
